And Even More Used Car Deals From Ryan!

Our buddy and all around good guy Ryan Jolapa has once again generously taken the time to share a few more of his profitable used car deals with all of us.

Ryan details how he went through a slow time near the end of last summer and then BAM! everything broke loose and he was able to pull down a few great car deals. Late summers can be slow times for buying and selling used cars because its hot and families are taking their vacation before the kids go back to school.

Here is the email I got from Ryan…

“Hey man,

So I told you about the trade for the F-150 and that was on Tuesday which was my first true car action in about 6

buy and sell used cars

weeks….well last night at 10:30 p.m. I sold my 02 Firebird with 134k miles and T-Tops for $4000 which was my asking price, I had $2700 in it and it had a rebuilt title…KBB private party good on it was $5200 so I felt that was a fair price considering how good it looked, picture attached…

I snagged this car off a guy who was going through some kind of medical condition which made it very difficult for him to squat and getting into the car was just too painful. It wasn’t in perfect condition, had to do some tire stuff, MAJOR detailing by me, and some minor interior fixes, but drove good. He was asking $3500 and I got him down to $2700. Its a little harder to twist their arms on price when the starting price is already so low.

I was patient in buying this car, I literally, talked, called, texted, etc. for over a week with them, twisted them down on the price day by day…and each day it didnt sell for them they liked me more. I was a little afraid even buying at $2700, I’d rather have bought it at 2400 or so…but it worked out good.

So buying at $2700 and selling at $4000 got me $1300 profit. My wife and I took it out on a date night and of course took the T-Tops out and that was fun, plus I got to look supercool driving to work in it…

Next story….oh yes Steve, there’s more…not even 18 hours later, I had a bite on my 01 LOADED to the MAX Dodge Durango…let me give you the Specs…. Leather, 3rd row seating, 4×4, Heated Seats, Rear Air, Premium Sound, Power Everything, Trip Computer with Mileage, eco mileage, miles till empty compass, temp, etc, it also had remote start, premium wheels, the list goes on and on Steve…Yes, it did have 171k miles, but ran great like it had 71k….seriously….don’t laugh at me…I know its a dodge…yes I know I just said 171k…would you let me finish….ok…

So when I bought this kitten it was a family selling it to get some money to fly out to California and see family. They posted it like around 4 O’clock a few weeks ago on a Friday, and I saw it at 4:01…Ibuying and selling used cars put my Buy and Sell Used Cars for Profit skills to work called and said let’s meet NOW, their ad said MUST SELL, and they had it priced ridiculously low at like $2600 I think, and its worth around $5400 KBB Private Party Good Value, well I grabbed my little 17 year old sister to come with me since my wife was on Baby duty and we went and looked at this Durango. It looked nice as you can see in the pic.

It ran good, the AC was good, but had no gas in it…literally the little trip computer said 0 miles to empty…so I had to buy gas, and while we did that I had my little sister rummage through the entire vehicle looking for records, receipts, service records etc, we found some good stuff showing good maintenance, some engine work, and some other things which made me feel good about the vehicle. So I haggled with them some and got it down to $2200, I did that by whipping out my 22 $100 bills…that ALWAYS does the trick when I’m out of things to say to get them to come down more…we were stuck at $2400…so I said…well I’ve got this $2200 here in cash…flashing them the cash and they said “DEAL”.

The vehicle was a bit dirty and had some what of a funky smell to it…so I had my little sister detail it the next day while I was at work…we let her swim in our pool and my wife took her out to lunch…got to love cheap labor….

Anyways back to this afternoon, a couple called me wanted to see it…so we met…they both drove it and loved it….they got their cash and we met up a couple hours later and we agreed on $3500 cash. Total profit=$1300. So that’s $2600 profit cash in my hand off 2 cars in under 18 hours….also did it in the same Wal-mart parking lot haha…same parking spot even. I know it seems odd to most people that I am selling these vehicles so far below their value…the thing with that is…buy cheaper sell cheap…it helps you sell faster and have happier customers.

Additionally not only did I sell 2 cars in 18 hours but essentially with the trade of the Tahoe on Tuesday, I moved 3 vehicles in 5 days after going 6 weeks with no action since selling my 01 Mustang GT Convertible…pic attached too :-) that was a hard car to let go…

So in recap…after 6 of my worst car selling weeks, I had arguably my best week ever…especially when you factor in that F-150 I have now.

Thanks for all your help and advice as always Steve.

Blessings,

Ryan”

I’ve done both, flipped without registering, and registered. I’ve actually for the meantime stopped flipping without doing the proper paper work. It delays your sale about 3 weeks on registration and title and such.

I’m working on getting my dealer’s license so I don’t have to wait on paperwork.

Yeah…unless you have a dealer license, you have to pay the sales tax, title transfer, and licensing of the vehicle before you can resell it. Most states also have a limit to how many vehicles you can sell per year without a dealer license. Maybe Ryan has a dealer license.

The techniques for how to deal with used car paperwork vary from state to state but here are three general ways…

      1) Transfer each vehicle into your own name (and pay the sales tax) and then wait for the DMV to send you the new title. You would then add the sales tax and any other fees you paid to the DMV to the selling price of the vehicle so you can get it back. This method works best if you have two to three vehicles cycling simultaneously so you can enjoy driving one of them while waiting for the paperwork to arrive. Do this right and its like having a free car to drive instead of being a typical consumer with a car that is basically a money pit.

      2) Sell the car with an “open title” which means you pass the same title you got from the seller over to your buyer. I can not personally recommend you do that but its done all the time out there in the real world.

      3) Get your own car dealer license, but here’s the thing… In some states its easy, cheap and fast to get a car dealer license and some are a slow, expensive and a major pain in the ass. However, there is a cheaper (initially) and faster method I reveal that allows you to LEGALLY sell as many cars as you want per year without having your own dealers license. Yes, I said LEGAL.
