Why To NEVER Get Emotionally Involved In a Car

1982 Porsche 928I spoke to a guy a few years ago who bought my book that was really excited because he was about to retire and planned to sell used Porsches in his spare time.

He told me he had come to know these quirky cars quite well because he had owned several Porsches over the years and he loved them.

Passion

I thought his plan to dabble in Porsches was really cool because Porsches were his passion. (I wish I had his name and email address because I’d like to talk to him and do a case study.)

The light side of passion

  • Passion makes whatever you are doing more fun.
  • Passion keeps you pushing forward during difficult times.
  • Passion can make it easier to see mistakes as learning experiences.

However, passion can be a double-edged sword…

The dark side of passion

  • Passion can cause you to become emotionally involved in a vehicle.
  • Passion can cause you to ignore common sense inspection rules.

Left brain short circuit

The left side of your brain is the rational/logical part of your brain. Unbridled passion is NOT a good thing if it causes you to become emotionally involved in a car because it can cause your left brain to short circuit.

Hot chicks

For example: Any dude reading this knows personally how the sight of a  woman can short circuit your brain. A typical example is when a beautiful woman walks by while you’re involved in a serious conversation:

“Yes I think we should implement this plan immediately (pretty girl walks by)…and uh…duuuh…uh…  Oh crap, what the hell were we talking about?”

Well, out-of-control passion can cause your brain to short circuit and make dumb mistakes in the used car business too.

Emotionally involved

Being passionate and becoming emotionally involved in a car can cause you to break all common sense inspection rules by ignoring potentially expensive noises, checking out the car at night in the dark, or in the rain, etc.

Being emotionally involved in a car can cause you to pay more for it than its worth. Or later you’ll try to sell the car for ridiculously inflated high price that no moderately sane car buyer would ever pay…and worse…you’ll hold out for that price long after you should.

Solution

Never ever get emotionally involved in a car!

What should you do if the car you’re looking at doesn’t match your pre-determined objectives based on…

  • Price
  • Condition
  • Type of car

 Walk away from it and move on to the next deal.

Now, please don’t think that I’m against you being passionate about the used car business, or even a particular type of car. No, no, I’m all about being passionate about the things you love. However, I’m just saying that if you are bringing passion into the used car business (or any business for that matter), then you must be aware of any potential pitfalls that passion could cause for you. And once you are aware of those pitfalls, then go ahead and throw yourself into it with everything you’ve got!

    Me too Matt and the deal went down like Steve described it in this article where I paid too much for the car at the beginning because I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT and then I kept trying to make up for it by selling it for an unrealistically high price. I finally dumped it but at least I broke even on it. Major lesson learned!

    I did the same thing with a Mercedes once. I spent too much because it was for a car that I wanted to keep for myself (emotional involvement!) but knew I couldn’t afford it to keep it at that time. I did all the wrong things with it too like paying too much, inspecting it at night, and overlooking some mechanical stuff just because I was so into it. Dumb but valuable lesson learned.
