So I carefully planned our escape – had a huge yard sale — and moved!

I can’t even begin to express to you how exciting and scary that move was.

I had a job lined up but that fell through the first week I got there.

So here we were in one of the most expensive places to live on earth (seriously)…

With little cash — no connections — no family or friends to rely on…

And the island was going through the worst recession it had seen in 20 years!

YIKES!

I don’t give up easily, but dang, this was messed up, man!

It was only the combination of my silly pride, stubborness, and insatiable desire to windsurf that kept me from bailing back to the mainland with my tail between my legs.

Shortly after that — and trying really hard to maintain and NOT freak out over what I had gotten myself and family into…

I went to a yard sale and just as I was leaving I noticed a filthy car in the guys car port.

Hmmm, I needed a car for my wife…

So after talking to the guy and negotiating a bit — I bought it.

Yeah, cool, except the wife-ee person didn’t like the car!

Hey c’mon, man, I just put out $450.00 and now I had to sell it?!

And sell it I did, in fact…

I made a $1200.00 profit!

And then I bought and sold another used car — and another — and another…

All the while refining my techniques for buying and selling used cars.

Yes, it was a very good life and I can proudly say that I achieved my objective to windsurf my arse off because the awesome days of windsurfing I missed could be counted on only one hand…

My 7 Rules for Buying and Selling Used Cars For Profit…

RULE 1: Never allow yourself to become emotionally involved in a car deal. Break this first rule and you’ll probably break all the rest.

RULE 2: Never buy a car without knowing what it should sell for.

RULE 3: Never waste your time and gas driving everywhere looking at cars without first interrogating the seller with a series of well thought out questions who’s answers will tell you if the car is worth looking at.

RULE 4: Never inspect a used car at night or when it’s raining.

RULE 5: Never buy a car unless you’re able to get the cars engine up to normal operating temperate for a fairly extended period of time.

RULE 6: Never pay for a car without getting the title (certificate of ownership).

RULE 7: Never buy a gas hog when gas prices are spiking unless the price for the vehicle is so insanely low that you’ll be able to sell it for a super low price and still make a profit.

MYTH 1: You need a big car lot with massive overhead. WRONG!

Reality: You can sell a car whenever you feel like it – or 5, or 20 — or have a big car lot with 100 cars. I strongly recommend you start very small and don’t “go big” until a couple years after — IF you even choose to.


MYTH 2: You need tons of money to start. WRONG!

Reality: I started from home with only $450.


MYTH 3: You must have expert knowledge of car. WRONG!

Reality: I knew almost nothing about cars when I started and 20 years later I still don’t like to get my hands greasy. (Proper guidance and common sense is key.) However, if you do have knowledge of cars then consider that a bonus that’ll give you an edge over the 95% of us that don’t.


MYTH 4: The hours are long and grueling. WRONG!

Reality: Having free time to do the things I’m passionate about is extremely important to me. Buying and selling cars allows you to have that thing that most businesses don’t –  quality of life.


MYTH 5: The real money is made selling NEW cars. WRONG!

Reality: You might be surprised to know that profits for new cars is extremely low. Those big shiny new car dealerships make their money from the financing, pushing aftermarket stuff like rust-proofing, window tinting, extended warranties, maintenance and repairs. etc. Their biggest profits by far come from selling used cars. In fact, after the crash in 2008, numerous old and very well established new car dealerships stopped selling new cars entirely and focused on selling used cars only.


MYTH 6: You need to quit your day job to do this. WRONG!

Reality: The flexibility from buying and selling cars will allow you to keep your current job forever — if you choose to. This business is the perfect spare time business too which is why it’s perfect for students, stay-at-home parents, and retired folks.


MYTH 7: You need superior intelligence to do this. WRONG!

Reality: Hah! I didn’t even go to college and I’m no brainiac either. The key to your success involves having the desire and motivation to change your life for the better + the ability to follow simple easy instructions.


MYTH 8: This business only works in the USA. WRONG!
