Beware of Buying Flood Damaged
Cars and How
To Avoid Water Damaged Cars
Beware of buying flood damaged cars! Recent hurricanes have "flooded"
(pun intended!) the used car market with cheap water damaged cars, but these cars have been cleaned up so well that you probably won't know they were
a water damaged car...until later.
The problem is that thousands of old, new and slightly used cars get flooded every year from hurricanes and torrential rains. These water damaged cars often appear to be in excellent and even like-new condition.

So why not buy a cheap flood damaged car?
The problem is that water damaged cars end up with severely damaged electrical systems that may not manifest
problems until a little later (like right after you buy it) because the corrosion of the electrical components continues on...and on...and on...and on...and its worse when the flooding was from salt water.
Here is what to look for...
:: MOLD: You need to take careful notice when inspecting a flood damaged car
for any indication of mold or the smell of mold.
:: RUST: Look closely under the car, in the trunk (maybe under the spare tire), and under the hood for any signs of rust. It wouldn't be unusual to see rust on an old car but it would be a huge red flag to see it on a newer automobile.
:: SALVAGE TITLES: Look at the title to see if it is a Salvage Vehicle. These are vehicles declared a total loss by car insurance companies because the damage to them was too severe and repairs would cost more than the car is worth.
:: VEHICLE HISTORY REPORT: Get a
Free CARFAX Record Check
to check the chain of ownership
and to see any indication that the car was totaled and later re-titled in another state.
:: TITLE WASHING: One of the problems with flood damaged cars is that they are declared a "total loss" and then sold at auction with a salvage title. The new buyer will recondition them and then have them re-titled in a different state...and poof...now they have a clean title. This process is known as Title Washing or the Used Vehicle Title Washing and you must be very aware of it with flood damaged cars.
