Curbstoning Used Cars
For Profit
Curbstoning is when a private party buys a used
car at a low price and then sells the car from their
house to another private party at a higher price, thus
making a profit.
This term is used because the place they usually park the car
they are selling is at the curb in front of their house, hence
the term curbstoner. Get it?
Many in the used car business, specifically car dealers, resent
curbstoners because they didn't go through the time and expense
involved in getting their car dealers license like they chose
to do. I can't really blame the car dealers for feeling that
way either.
But some licensed car dealers spread stories about how all
curbstoners are ripping off their customers and are evading
taxes because these are under-the-table cash deals.
So whats the truth
Steve?
Well, some curbstoners are lying cheating scumbags...but so are
some of the licensed car dealers too!
And just because someone buys and sells cars from their house
does not mean they are dishonest and don't pay their their
income taxes...but neither does having a car dealers license
guarantee that individual will be a more honest person.
As in all walks of life, the truth
is that some people are honest, and some are not,
but we honest people still outnumber the
scumbags!
Yes, fortunately most people curbstoning are
honest decent people and the used car market is so huge
that there is room for lots of us to make money in the
used car business!
Some governments impose limits on how many cars a private party
can buy and sell per year, but I have yet to hear about limits
on how many cars a private party can personally own and
then choose to sell later. There is a clear difference.
The great thing about curbstoning is that you can start slow,
and if you choose to, you can work on getting your own car
dealers license later for your used car business.
