Car Model Terms with Definitions
Here are car model terms with definitions from
A to Z....

Cabriolet (Convertible, Ragtop): A fancy name for a car with top that
folds down.
Classic: A vehicle made between 25 and 50 years ago.
Compact Car: A small fuel efficient car like a Honda Civic or a Toyota
Corolla.
Conversion Van: A van that is sent by a car dealership to a third party
to have customized.
Coupe: A two door vehicle with a hard top.
Customized (Custom): A stock vehicle with extensive aftermarket
modifications that when complete, can look and operate radically different from
the original vehicle.
Family Sedan (Sedan): A vehicle with four doors.
Full-Size Van: A large square shaped vehicle that is used to carry cargo
or may have seating for as many as 12 people. They are built on truck frames.
Ford, Dodge, Chevy and GMC all make full-sized vans.
Historical: A vehicle that is more than fifty years old.
Kit Car (Replica Car): Fiberglass bodies that usually fit on the chassis
of an existing stock vehicle. The bodies closely resemble another vehicle like a
classic or sports car, etc.
Luxury Sedan: A four door sedan loaded with options and accessories.
Minivan: Similar to a full-sized van but much shorter and usually only
used to carry people. They are usually built on passenger vehicle frames.
Muscle Car (Pony Cars): Big bad fast gas guzzling souped-up American
built V8 cars from the sixties and early seventies with little or no smog
equipment. Some of the high performance Camaro's, Mustangs and GTO's were
considered Muscle Cars.
Pickup Truck: In the "old days' pickups were strictly utilitarian
vehicles used to carry cargo and tools in their beds. Now they are one of the
largest selling vehicles in the world dripping with every luxury available and
rarely used by the consumer for their original use.
Roadster: Small two seat sports cars with a convertible top or hard
removable top.
Sedan: A four door hardtop car with front and back seats.
SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle): SUV's originally started with the Chevrolet
Suburban in the 1920's and later the International Harvester and then Ford
Bronco. Most car manufacturer make SUV's now in both full-sized and smaller
versions. SUV's are popular because they are functional for carrying humans and
junk.
Sports Car: The car model term "sports car" is so loosely used and can be
anything from a sporty looking Ford Focus with some goofy adhesive stripes on it
to an exotic and true sports car like a $500,000.00 Porsche GT.
Station Wagons: These are usually four door vehicles where the area
extending over the area that would be the trunk is the same height as the rest
of the cab, thus giving more storage space in the back.
Sub Compact: A car model term that describes a car that is smaller than a
compact car. These fuel efficient cars usually come in 2, 4 door, hatchback and
station wagon versions.
