Crashed Car Was Most Expensive Car Ever Sold At Auction

Ferrari 250 GTO - 24h Le MansThe most expensive car ever sold at an auction just sold for *$38,000,000.00 at the Bonham auction in Carmel, California.

This gorgeous car was a red 1962 Ferrari GTO Berlinetta, but here’s the interesting and kinda creepy part of the story…

Driver killed and car wrecked

This Ferrari came second place in the 1962 Tour De France car but crashed later that year while racing. The driver was killed and Ferrari took the car and rebuilt it. Of course we all know that a previously wreck car severely reduces resale value, but in this case, the cars past added to its mystique.

Another record broken

Then the car was purchased by an Italian race car driver that raced it regularly up into the 2000’s. He owned that car for the last 49 years, which according to Ferrari, was the longest anyone had ever owned a Ferrari.

The $50 MILLION car

Another Ferrari sold previously in a private party sale for $50,000,000.00 which is why many of the so-called “experts” thought this red Ferrari could sell for as much as $70,000,000.00 at the auction.

The top 10 cars sold were Ferraris

Here’s a list of the top ten cars that sold at the auction that weekend:

1) 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Coupe, $38,115,000

2) 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale Coupe, $26,400,000

Yeah thats a lot of dough for a car and it sure seems like the high-end vintage car market is in a bubble much like real estate was in the late 2000’s.

I agree that that car had an interesting background and that no doubt added to its intrigue and ultimately the crazy high price that it sold for.

Yes I have always thought that model was absolutely stunning too! The curves in the front are similar to Jaguars old XKE. I wonder who borrowed from who?
