Export Salvage Cars For Profit!

Export Salvage Cars For ProfitSalvage cars purchased from U.S. salvage auctions are selling for a premium outside the U.S. in countries where few can afford a new car.

Salvage vehicles are vehicles declared total losses by insurance companies because the repairs would cost more than 80% of the vehicles current retail value.

The high demand for salvage vehicles has helped to double the price at auctions but most still sell for less than $2000.

I don’t recommend buying and selling cars with salvage titles if you’re going to sell them within the U.S. because potential buyers usually freak out and run away with their hands in the air like little girls when you whip out the title and they see the words ”salvage title” on it, but with the weak dollar here, these same vehicles sell quite well when exported to other countries.

For example,  Lithuanians want Lexus and in Poland they want Nissans, Toyotas and Subarus. Ford trucks are in high demand in Mexico and Central America, and they love four wheel drive trucks too.

Salvage vehicles are selling for as much as $3000 at salvage car auctions but even with shipping costs as much as $1000 the deal can still make sense because repair costs are much less outside the U.S.

To export salvage cars for profit could be an incredible revenue stream for you, especially if you have a trusted friend or relative in the country you want to export to, however, I don’t recommend anyone buy and sell used cars without first gaining the knowledge in how to do it. Obviously, right?

    Thanks John!

One thing I forgot to mention in my Export Salvage Cars For Profit post here above was that the Mexican government just recently instituted a law that ONLY allows used cars that are 10 years old into their country.

That means it can’t be older than 10 years old and it can’t be newer than 10 years old. Bizarre, right? Apparently the reason is to limit stinky old cars (I guess they are actually starting to think about the air pollution factor) and nothing newer is to protect the car dealerships down there because people were buying used cars at auctions here in the U.S. and then would export them to Mexico for big profits.

But guess what? If you live in the U.S. and fairly close to the Mexican border…and you have a 1989 vehicle for sale…it’ll sell for a premium because of this.

I am from Florida and work in the Middle East. I have found that salvage/ rebuildable cars are in high demand here. I have been working on contacts and have my route sorted out from Florida to here. Even got a better deal on import fees through the Ministry of Finance. I have someone that is local I trust to do the work and he also has contacts. He says sometimes they are sold as soon as the container is opened. We plan to get a holding and selling lot. I am excited about the prospect but leary. I need to find as much information as I can. With me unable to be in the states in person it may be harder? I have seen lots of sites where you bid on auction cars online? I would enjoy talking with someone that has experience in this endeavor.

    Thanks

Ten years… So if I have a 2002 f150 sport in good condition how much do you think it would sell for to mexico in 2012?

    Brian,

Regarding your post about pricing a 2002 F150 to sell in Mexico in the year 2012…

Wait a minute while I turn on my crystal ball here.

Are you kidding dude?! I couldn’t possibly tell you what your truck will be worth 2.5 years from now…especially what it would sell for in Mexico…and no one else could do that either. Is there some kind of Kelley Blue Book for Mexico? That won’t help you for projecting out 2.5 years though, but when you are ready to sell it could. If that doesn’t exist, then just look at the used car prices around that time for the same vehicle in Craigslist or whatever publications are in your area.

I am looking to do this and randomly searched and found this good website. I want to ship salvage cars to Dubai where I know a guy who sells cars. Is it a good idea? I will sell 2004 to 2009 used honda or toyota. He said the car has to be fixed and free from dents/scratches and it will sell. Who should I use to ship the cars? How long is the wait until the 3 cars sell? Has anyone done this before?

    Hi John,

Exporting cars to Dubai (or anywhere) can be a really good idea if you’ve done your research and have determined what the market is like for the kind of cars you plan on moving. If the market is good, then the next really important thing is to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the person on the other end is someone that you can 100% trust in. Seriously, you have to feel so good about this person that you could trust them with your kids.

Thanks for the information. I am getting into this business as well …just started. I want to export to Central America and Jamaica and any parts of the Carribean. Do you know if the 10yr regulation is the same in those countries?

Good Luck to all who are working this business.

    Hey Traci,

Sorry but I have no idea what the regs are like in those other countries. Do your homework and check, re-check and double check – especially to see what tariffs/taxes they may impose.

Is there anyway I can ship my car out of US to another country by sea without a title?
If not from US, what about from Mexico, assuming I drive it there?

I have no idea if that is allowed or not. Did you check out that fed gov site I mentioned in my article above? You need to contact someone there and ask them.

I live in Texas and soon will be going to Guatemala where I am originally from. I am planning to move back in the next 2 years. I was researching this site because I am planning to do it whenever I live there, however I am thinking my brother lives there I could help in finding a place to rent and have cars get shipped to, the port could be the one in Houston and it could go directly to the port in Guatemala. I would have to research the laws but I believe they are similar. If you are interested in a joint venture, we can exchange a few emails. But yeah I wouldn’t want to do it unless I trust the person who I am doing the business with.
